Wesley Introductory Vocal Class

This new introductory voice class will give young budding vocalists an opportunity to develop and explore their voices in a private lesson setting. Students will learn proper posture, breathing techniques, and basic music theory. They will learn to use proper vocal technique to allow students to sing with consistent, accurate intonation as well as learn to properly care for their voice. This class will allow students to gain confidence singing solo as well as harmonize with others as they are exposed to a wide range of music from classics to Broadway. Special performances on the last day of the session.

Course Overview

Each class will be divided into 3 parts. Each class with begin with the fundamentals of vocal technique including breathing and vocal exercises. Then the class will focus on learning to Sight Sing notes, melodies and various rhythms. The final part of the class will allow the students to have some fun and learn an exciting song that the students can sing together. Note: the course outline below is subject to change depending on the progress of the students.

For the 1st class please bring a binder with lined paper, a pen/pencil & eraser.

Each student must also bring a RECORDING DEVICE (i.e. iPod, iphone, voice recorder) to each lesson, so that they may record the lesson and practice to it at home. This will be discussed more in detail in the introductory lesson.

Lesson 1

Lesson 2

-Stretches and Breathing Exercises- Understanding our Vocal Instrument

-Learning proper vowels and vocalising

-Learning basic Warm up scales

-Clapping and Rhythm exercises- “Johnny Works, Bernie Bee, & Oliver Twist”

-Begin learning “L-O-V-E” from the movie “The Little Rascals”

Lesson 3

Singing the Notes on the Page”

-Stretches and Breathing Exercises

-Review of proper vowels and vocalising

-Review of basic warm up scales

-Review of Rhythm exercise

-Learn to Sight Sing notes on vowels & rhythms “Teddy Bear, Charlie over the ocean, & Tick Tock”

-Review and continue to learn more of “L-O-V-E” from the movie “The Little Rascals”

Lesson 4

DO, RE, MI, FA,SO…-The Solfege”

– Stretches and Breathing Exercises

– Basic Warm up scales- focusing on proper use of vowels

– Learning the “Solfege”

– Singing scales on the Solfege

– Review of Sight Singing notes on vowels and rhythms

– Complete learning “L-O-V-E” from the movie “The Little Rascals” and being memorizing the song

Lesson 5

Beauty & The Beast

– Stretches and Breathing Exercises

– Basic Warm Up Scales- focusing on vowels & the Solfege

– Sight Singing Notes on Text “Ring Around the Rosie & Star Light, Star Bright”

– Review & Memorize “L-O-V-E” from the movie “The Little Rascals””

-Begin Learning “Beauty and the Beast “- Disney

Lesson 6

Preparation for the performance”

-Stretches and Breathing Exercises

-Learning to properly care for your voice in preparation for a performance

-Basic Warm Up Scales- Introduction of new vocal warm ups

-Sight Singing Notes on Vowels, Rhythms & Text “See Saw, Rain Rain, Partner”

– Sing “L-O-V-E” from the movie “The Little Rascals” with no music, memorized

– Continue to Learn and complete “Beauty and the Beast “- Disney

Preparation for the Final Evaluation in Lesson 7:

1) Each student will choose from any of the sight singing exercises we have covered (i.e. See Saw, Ring Around the Rosie, etc.) and will sing it solo without music during Lesson 7.

2) Each student will sing 2 vocal scales we have covered of the teacher’s choice. Students will find out which vocal scales they will be singing on the day of the evaluation. In preparation, the students should practice all the scales we have covered.

Lesson 7

Final Review, Evaluation & Practice”

-Stretches and Breathing Exercises

-Basic Warm up scales- singing on vowels and the solfeggi

Final Evaluation

1) Each student will choose from any of the sight singing exercises we have covered (i.e. See Saw, Ring Around the Rosie, etc.) and will sing it solo without music.

2) Each student will sing 2 vocal scales we have covered of the teacher’s choice. Students will find out which vocal scales they will be singing on the day of the evaluation.

– Sing “L-O-V-E” from the movie “The Little Rascals- no music, full run through practice for the Special Performance

-Sing “Beauty and the Beast” – Disney with/without music, full run through practice for the Special Performance

Lesson 8
